How to Choose the Right Engagement Session Location

When it comes to picking out the place where you get your engagement pictures taken, there’s really no right or wrong answer. Chances are, you probably haven’t had your pictures professionally taken as a couple too often- and that’s totally okay! I’m here to help. Whatever your vision is (if you have one!)- we can make it happen. Check out my tips on how to pick the perfect engagement session location!

Pick a Meaningful Location

If you’re having trouble picking a spot, start with somewhere sentimental. Maybe the place you had your first date? Your favorite bar to frequent? Maybe even the park where you shared your first kiss. When you pick a spot that has meaning to you both, the memories start flooding in and that’s when the magic happens. You’re already warmed up to the spot, and it’s easier to get in front of the camera when you have all those adorable heart eyes for each other! This couple above picked a few of their favorite places to take pictures, at- but I have to say, the ice cream parlor was the sweetest.

Choose Your Favorite Scenery

Another great option for engagement photos is to pick some scenery that you just love! Whether you and your boo are big hiking fans, or you prefer to sun bathe on the beach- pick a spot that has some naturally gorgeous scenery and you’re ready to go. I definitely recommend finding a photographer that knows their way around your area. A local photographer probably has some hidden gem locations up their sleeve, and I personally LOVE getting to scout out the best spots for my couples!

Do the Opposite of Your Wedding Location

To get some real variety, pick somewhere that’s the complete opposite of your wedding venue! For instance, if you’re getting married in the desert, try doing your engagement session by the beach! Doing a rooftop soiree? Frolic through the woods or a large field! Picking somewhere completely opposite of your venue not only gives you more chances to explore, but it also makes for a great contrast if you choose to use your engagement photos at the wedding or on your stationary.

Bonus Option: Rent an Air BnB

One of my FAVE options is renting out an epic Air BnB for your engagement photos!! We can start at a dope looking  Air BnB with an in-home session near the location you want to shoot, then venture off to the location. An added bonus is that the AirBnB is private and we can just focus on the two of you without the distractions of a public place. One of the big perks of going this route is that you can make a weekend out of it and enjoy a relaxing staycation amidst the craziness of wedding planning.

A few things to keep in mind…

When picking your engagement session location, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind. First, is the location a tourist attraction or a local favorite? If so, we’ll want to shoot early in the morning around sunrise, otherwise your gorgeous background will be covered in swarms of people and draw attention away from you and your fiance. Second, what time of year are these photos being taken? If you choose a steamy summer month like August, you’re going to want to avoid places like Joshua Tree or Palm Springs. Heat stroke is never a good on camera look. Likewise, if you choose a cooler month, make sure to layer up!
